I loved this. I related so well to not being able to push myself to read German. I speak German fluently but I simply can’t sit down and enjoy a German novel.
I also understand how German can sound “shockingly” beautiful when some people speak it. And I grew up with French speakers who equated speaking German to hacking.
This piece was lovely.

I so enjoyed your WEST OF THEN, and I was interested in your mothers progress. Hope she is well and doing well.

I read the Sept 2011 New Yorker article about Thomas Struth. According to the author, Tara Bray Smith gracefully agreed to live in Dusseldorf.
What a patronizing and parochial comment. I’m ashamed for both women. I hope it actually only reflects on the author with her patronizing comments about Struth and the Germans she met.
Otherwise, I hope … well, never mind.
